How does Albemarle County support novice teachers?

Albemarle County believes in the power of collaborative learning. For educators new to the profession, the division has a Novice Teacher Network that is a collegial community supported by division staff, school staff,  and instructional coaches.  As a member of this network, novices receive the following types of support:

  1. job-embedded, individualized, and consistent support from an instructional coach
  2. ongoing reflection and goal setting based on the standards of the Teacher Performance Appraisal (TPA)
  3. membership in a supportive learning community of other novices and school division staff

Our support strategies were adapted from the nationally-recognized induction model developed by the New Teacher Center at the University of California, Santa Cruz, and evolved from a partnership with the University of Virginia and Charlottesville City Public Schools.  Currently, instructional coaches provide a combination of job-embedded support  coupled with whole-group forums.  Click on the Professional Development for Novice Teachers link for more details.
