Sports Concussion Management Plan
Albemarle County Public Schools (ACPS) recognizes that a concussion can be a
serious brain injury. Concussions often are characterized by the onset of impairment of cognitive and/or physical functioning, and are caused by a blow to the head, face, or neck or a blow to the body that causes a sudden jarring of the head.
ACPS is committed to safe practice and provides a Sports Concussion Management Plan to ensure that (i) coaches, athletic directors, Certified Athletic Trainers (ATC), administrators, volunteers, student-athletes, and their parents are aware of the short-and long-term effects of concussions; (ii) student-athletes sustaining concussions are removed from play immediately and referred appropriately; (iii) student-athletes who have sustained concussions are returned to play only after receiving appropriate medical care, adequate time to heal, and demonstrating no symptoms consistent with a concussion.
