 These books are required summer reading for students who have been accepted into an Honors or AP level course for the 2012-2013 school year. Be sure to download the Complete Requirements for your class and read them carefully. Books with a * are available in eBook format.

John Steinbeck, The Acts of King Arthur and His Noble Knights*

(1976)

Steinbeck, who credited these stories with getting him hooked on reading as a child, retells Sir Thomas Malory's tales of King Arthur and his knights in modern language, based on Malory's Winchester manuscripts and other sources.

Chris Matthews, Hardball (1988)

 

Matthews defines the title term: "Hardball is clean, aggressive, Machiavellian politics. It is the discipline of gaining and holding power, useful to any profession or undertaking, but practiced most openly and unashamedly in the world of public affairs." Read the book carefully and be prepared to take a quiz during the second week of school.
