Sutherland Middle School Counseling Staff:

How to See a Counselor:

  1. Stop by Guidance to fill out a form. Teacher permission is needed during class time.
  2. Parents may call or e-mail a referral.
  3. A teacher may send a student to Guidance if he or she feels it is necessary.
  4. Your counselor may call you in to the office to speak during class. This is typically done during electives.

SMS Counseling Goals:

The goals of the counseling program at Sutherland are as follows:
  1. to assist each student in his/her adjustment to middle school and transition to high school;
  2. to assist the student in academic achievement and educational growth;
  3. to assist the student in personal and social development;
  4. to help the student establish and maintain positive interpersonal and peer relationships;
  5. to help the student develop effective problem solving and decision making skills;
  6. to provide the student with guidance in career exploration;
  7. to help the student appreciate the dignity and value of work and to incorporate appropriate leisure activities;
  8. to be accessible and sensitive to the needs of the middle school student during this period of change and growth;
  9. and to provide a positive emotional climate to enhance the total educational program.

Student Services:

The Sutherland Middle School counselors will provide the following services:
  1. Counsel individuals and groups and provide guidance to students regarding their personal, social, educational, and vocational concerns.
  2. Consult with parents, teachers, administrators and other support personnel regarding individual students.
  3. Orient new students to Sutherland.
  4. Work closely with the community by interpreting the school and guidance program to the community and to the parents.
  5. Maintain and update student records.
  6. Participate in case conferences on individual students.
  7. Assist in referring students with special problems to sources of help.
  8. Interpret standardized test scores to students, parents and teachers.
  9. Assist in the registration and scheduling of students.
  10. Work cooperatively with administration and teachers.
