Summer is a Great Time to Visit Colleges
Parents of sophomores and
juniors! Help your student in their college planning. Juniors should be putting
the final touches on the list of colleges they want to apply to in the fall.
Help them finalize their plans (and help give sophomores a leg up) by planning
a college visit or two over the summer! Help students prepare for visits by
encouraging them to do research on their own before you go. For more tips on
making the most of a college visit, students or parent are always invited to
bring questions to Ms. Brown!

Career Cruising
10th grade
students recently participated in 10th Grade Career Day on March 14, but did
you know there are plenty of other college and career planning resources
available for students? Career Cruising
is an online career planning
tool that provides a wealth of information on a multitude of careers. Students
may research careers by likes/dislikes, preferred school subject, skills, and
career cluster. They are able to view interviews with people in the field,
conduct detailed research on careers, colleges, and financial aid. Students may
also save all work to their portfolio. The saved information can be helpful for
students when registering for classes and developing their career plan. Most
10th, 11th and 12th grade students have already used Career Cruising. 9th grade
students have access to this tool but need to contact Mrs. Neil to determine
their user-ID and password. We encourage you to talk with your student about
their career interests and goals and invite you to visit Career Cruising with your student!

NEW! Kluge-Ruhe
Art Internship – Become an Art Historian!
The Young Art
Historians Program is designed to develop essential skills in high school
students for college and career readiness. The Kluge-Ruhe Aboriginal Art
Collection of UVA has numerous objects about which very little is known. This summer,
help us solve the mystery of a painting! Participants will spend two afternoons
at the museum observing and investigating an artwork to produce a detailed
description for publication on the museum’s website. Students will develop
critical thinking skills and learn to communicate professionally with scholars.
Get “published” and build your college resume, while contributing to global
scholarship on Australian Aboriginal art!
The program dates are Friday, June 21st and
Friday, June 28th from 1 – 4 pm. The program is free and open
to current high school sophomores, juniors, and seniors.
Contact kluge-ruhe@virginia.edu by May 31st if interested. Space is limited!

UVA “Mini Med School”
Mini-Med
School is a program offered by the University of Virginia that brings an
abridged version of medical school to participating community members. The
program is open to high school students, U. Va. faculty and staff
members, community members, and anyone else who would like to learn more about
the medical profession.
During
the 7 week program enthusiastic UVA faculty members, with assistance from
current medical students, will lead the group in exploration of a wide range of
topics in medical education. Participants will experience such integral parts
of medical school as match day, research labs, patient interviews, and more.
Mini-Med will provide a behind the scenes look at the training of those we
entrust with our health, a greater sense of health literacy, and forge new
connections between the health system and our community. Mini-Med will also
feature entertainment provided by our talented medical students. There is no
cost to participate and while participants will not leave Mini-Med School with
a medical degree they will leave with knowledge, resources, and a certificate
of attendance.”
Applications
are being accepted for the fall program until August 12, 2013.
Mini-Medical School 2013 will be held on seven consecutive Wednesday evenings
this fall from September 4 to October 16, 2013.

Evaluating Summer Opportunities
The
summer months provide ample opportunities for young people to explore different
areas of knowledge, from academic enrichment to economic experiences. But how do parents and students know what
opportunities are worth the investment of their time and resources? The National Association for Gifted Children
has this to say:
“In order to match the interests, abilities, and developmental
needs of your child to the opportunities offered by traditional recreational
camps, athletic camps, and academic programs, you need to spend some time
thinking about what you want for your child. Be sure to give your child the
opportunity to talk about the kinds of activities that he or she finds fun,
engaging, and rewarding. If you and your child decide that an academic summer
program would be a good experience, here are several factors to consider as you
choose the program.”
